Mare Nostrum Project

MARE NOSTRUM - Space for Dialogue and Diversity

Collective memories - collective consciousness - the ability to transform

The Mare Nostrum project of Mundus maris is now closed.

The project was originally coordinated by Carla Zickfeld, then our Vice-President. Several members of the association contributed significantly to the birth of this project and gave full support to its development. Work started during the closing days of Dak’Art 2010 Biennale. Come 2011 with a renewed mandate from the General Assembly of Mundus maris, the intention was to consolidate the documentation in view of submitting proposals for funding to develop the scope of the project apace. Eventually, Carla Zickfeld advised Mundus maris Board in 2012, of which she was still a member at that time, that she had no intention to hand over any of the materials commissioned by Mundus maris and the disappointment and feeling of deception of the fisherfolk and their CNPS representatives was great. They addressed a letter to Carla Zickfeld in April 2012 withdrawing their consent for using the images and other materials collected in the context of the Mare Nostrum project of Mundus maris in any context outside the originally agreed one.  We publicly denounce and dissociate our Association in the strongest terms from Carla Zickfeld and Stefan Karkow’s action. Mundus maris reiterates that it will support any defensive action by the victims in Senegal. In the event, Mundus maris reaffirms its commitment to the collaboration with the fisherfolk and reiterates its rights to the commissioned materials in pursuit of the project agreed with them. We shall keep the legitimate material of the Mare Nostrum project on our website to honour our commitments, as we believe the underlying concepts and approaches are still pertinent. But we had to close the project with this now misleading name to avoid further abuse. See more details below.
